Nickel Cadmium battery information

NiCad battery technology was the first rechargeable technology to be used in consumer cells. You could expect to charge these batteries around 200 - 500 times under typical conditions. Early versions of these batteries did have problems with leakage and deformation when charged incorrectly but modern batteries from reputable brands have built in protection against this although it is worth noting that this protection is limited and eventually they will breakdown.

Memory Effect

One of the main properties of NiCad batteries is their memory effect. Memory effect is the term used when talking about the amount of charge left in the battery when it is recharged. NiCad batteries should only be charged when they have been completely flattened (discharged). If you recharge the battery with charge left in it then its life will be depleted which means the battery will have to replaced sooner than expected. Although modern NiCd batteries claim to not suffer from this property by using technologies such as foam electrodes, it is always advisable to discharge the battery before charging (never short circuit a battery to discharge it). Most decent NiCad chargers will have a discharge function some automatic, some manual which makes sure the battery is prepared the best it can be before recharging.

Hints & Tips:

Discharge NiCad batteries before recharging - this can help maintain the life of the battery.
Always charge batteries before first use.
Parallel charging or connection is not recommended.Parallel charging will produce irregular charging currents.
Never short circuit or reverse polarity in application.
Do not use different types of batteries in the same set.
If the battery has been deep discharged a prolonged charging time is required to bring the battery back to full capacity.
Always store batteries in a cool dry place.
After long storage e.g. over a year it is a good idea to charge / discharge the battery 3 times to restore full capacity.
NiCad batteries are an aging technology and if possible should be replaced with NiMH batteries. These are more environmentally friendly and offer much improved performance, although make sure your charging equipment is compatible.
